    The Two-Component Virial Theorem and the Physical Properties of Stellar Systems

    Motivated by present indirect evidences that galaxies are surrounded by dark matter halos, we investigate whether their physical properties can be described by a formulation of the virial theorem which explicitly takes into account the gravitational potential term representing the interaction of the dark halo with the barionic or luminous component. Our analysis shows that the application of such a ``two-component virial theorem'' not only accounts for the scaling relations displayed, in particular, by elliptical galaxies, but also for the observed properties of all virialized stellar systems, ranging from globular clusters to galaxy clusters.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX, corrected few typos.     "Fundamental-Plane"-Like Relations From Collisionless Stellar Dynamics: A Comparison of Mergers and Collapses

    We present a new set of dissipationless N-body simulations aiming to better understand the pure dynamical aspects of the ``Fundamental Plane'' (FP) of elliptical galaxies. We have extended our previous hierarchical merger scheme by considering the Hernquist profile for the initial galaxy model. Two-component Hernquist galaxy models were also used to study the effect of massive dark halos on the end-products characteristics. We have also performed new collapse simulations including initial spin. We found that the one-component Hernquist mergers give results similar to those found for the one-component King models, namely both were able to build-up small scatter FP-like correlations with slopes consistent with what is found for the near-infrared FP of nearby galaxies. The two-component models also reproduce a FP-like correlation, but with a significantly steeper slope. This is in agreement with what has been found for elliptical galaxies at higher redshift (0.1 << z << 0.6). We discuss some structural properties of the simulated galaxies and their ability to build-up FP-like correlations. We confirm that collapses generally do not follow a FP-like correlation regardless of the initial spin. We suggest that the evolution of gradients in the gravitational field of the merging galaxies may be the main ingredient dictating the final non-homology property of the end products.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, uses mn2e.cls.     The Nature of the Activity in Hickson Compact Groups of Galaxies

    We present the results of the spectral classification of the 82 brightest galaxies in a sample of 17 compact groups. We verify that the AGNs are preferentially located in the most early-type and luminous galaxies of the groups, as is usually observed in the field. But these AGNs also appear to be systematically concentrated towards the central parts of the groups. Our observations suggest a correlation between activity types, morphologies and densities of galaxies in the compact groups.     Tribo-electrochemical behavior of bio-functionalized TiO2 nanotubes in artificial saliva: Understanding of degradation mechanisms

    It has been shown that the synthesis of TiO2 nanotubes by anodization provides outstanding properties to Ti surfaces intended for dental and orthopedic implants applications. Beyond the very well-known potential of these surfaces to improve osseointegration and avoid infection, the knowledge on the adhesion and degradation behavior of TiO2 nanotubes under the simultaneous action of wear and corrosion is still poorly understood and these are issues of tremendous importance. The main aim of this work is to investigate, for the first time, the tribo-electrochemical degradation behavior of Ti surfaces decorated with TiO2 nanotubes before and after bio-functionalization treatments.Well-aligned TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) were produced containing elements natively present in bone such as calcium (Ca) and phosphorous (P), in addition of zinc (Zn) as an antimicrobial agent and stimulator of bone formation. The synthesis of Ca/P/Zn-doped nanotubes (NT-Ca/P/Zn) was achieved by reverse polarization and anodization treatments applied to conventional TiO2 nanotubes grown by two-step anodization. The nanotube surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM-DF) was used to characterize the Ti/TiO2 nanotubular films interfaces. Tribo-electrochemical tests were conducted under reciprocating sliding conditions in artificial saliva. The open circuit potential (OCP) was monitored before, during and after sliding tests, and the coefficient of friction (COF) values were registered during rubbing action. The wear tracks resulting from sliding tests were characterized by SEM and wear volume measurements were carried out by 2D profilometry.The results show that the tribo-electrochemical behavior of TiO2 nanotubes was significantly improved after bio-functionalization treatments.     Deterioration modeling of steel moment resisting frames using finite-length plastic hinge force-based beam-column elements

    The use of empirically calibrated moment-rotation models that account for strength and stiffness deterioration of steel frame members is paramount in evaluating the performance of steel structures prone to collapse under seismic loading. These deterioration models are typically used as zero-length springs in a concentrated plasticity formulation; however, a calibration procedure is required when they are used to represent the moment-curvature (M−χ) behavior in distributed plasticity formulations because the resulting moment-rotation (M−θ) response depends on the element integration method. A plastic hinge integration method for using deterioration models in force-based elements is developed and validated using flexural stiffness modifications parameters to recover the exact solution for linear problems while ensuring objective softening response. To guarantee accurate results in both the linear and nonlinear range of response, the flexural stiffness modification parameters are computed at the beginning of the analysis as a function of the user-specified plastic hinge length. With this approach, moment-rotation models that account for strength and stiffness deterioration can be applied in conjunction with force-based plastic hinge beam-column elements to support collapse prediction without increased modeling complexity

    Stellar Population Properties of ETGs in Compact Groups of Galaxies

    We present results on the study of the stellar population in Early-Type galaxies (ETGs) belonging to 151 Compact Groups (CGs). We also selected a field sample composed of 846 ETGs to investigate environmental effects on galaxy evolution. We find that the dependences of mean stellar ages, [Z/H] and [α\alpha/Fe] on central stellar velocity dispersion are similar, regardless where the ETG resides, CGs or field. When compared to the sample of centrals and satellites from the literature, we find that ETGs in GCs behave similarly to centrals, especially those embedded in low-mass haloes (Mh<1012.5MM_{h} < 10^ {12.5}M_{\odot}). Except for the low-mass limit, where field galaxies present a Starforming signature, not seen in CGs, the ionization agent of the gas in CG and field galaxies seem to be similar and due to hot, evolved low-mass stars. However, field ETGs present an excess of Hα\alpha emission relative to ETGs in CGs. Additionally, we performed a dynamical analysis, which shows that CGs present a bimodality in the group velocity dispersion distribution - a high and low-σ\sigma mode. Our results indicate that high-σ\sigma groups have a smaller fraction of spirals, shorter crossing times, and a more luminous population of galaxies than the low σ\sigma groups. It is important to emphasize that our findings point to a small environmental impact on galaxies located in CGs. The only evidence we find is the change in gas content, suggesting environmentally-driven gas loss.Comment: 21 pages, 18 Figure

    Spatiotemporal proteomic profiling of the pro-inflammatory response to lipopolysaccharide in the THP-1 human leukaemia cell line.

    Protein localisation and translocation between intracellular compartments underlie almost all physiological processes. The hyperLOPIT proteomics platform combines mass spectrometry with state-of-the-art machine learning to map the subcellular location of thousands of proteins simultaneously. We combine global proteome analysis with hyperLOPIT in a fully Bayesian framework to elucidate spatiotemporal proteomic changes during a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory response. We report a highly dynamic proteome in terms of both protein abundance and subcellular localisation, with alterations in the interferon response, endo-lysosomal system, plasma membrane reorganisation and cell migration. Proteins not previously associated with an LPS response were found to relocalise upon stimulation, the functional consequences of which are still unclear. By quantifying proteome-wide uncertainty through Bayesian modelling, a necessary role for protein relocalisation and the importance of taking a holistic overview of the LPS-driven immune response has been revealed.     Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR) Are Resistant to a Reserpine-Induced Progressive Model of Parkinson's Disease: Differences in Motor Behavior, Tyrosine Hydroxylase and alpha-Synuclein Expression

    Reserpine is an irreversible inhibitor of vesicular monoamine transporter-2 (VMAT2) used to study Parkinson's disease (PD) and screening for antiparkinsonian treatments in rodents. Recently, the repeated treatment with a low-dose of reserpine was proposed as a progressive model of PD. Rats under this treatment show progressive catalepsy behavior, oral movements and spontaneous motor activity decrement. In parallel, compared to Wistar rats, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) are resistant to acute reserpine-induced oral dyskinesia. We aimed to assess whether SHR would present differential susceptibility to repeated reserpine-induced deficits in the progressive model of PD. Male Wistar and SHR rats were administered 15 subcutaneously (s.c.) injections of reserpine (0.1 mgkg) or vehicle, every other day and motor activity was assessed by the catalepsy, oral movements and open field tests. Only reserpine-treated Wistar rats presented increased latency to step down in the catalepsy test and impaired spontaneous activity in the open field. On the other hand, there was an increase in oral movements in both reserpine-treated strains, although with reduced magnitude and latency to instauration in SHR. After a 15-day withdrawn period, both strains recovered from motor impairment, but SHR animals expressed reduced latencies to reach control levels. Finally, we performed immunohistochemistry for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and a-synuclein (alpha-syn) 48 h after the last injection or 15 days after withdrawn. Reserpinetreated animals presented a reduction in TH and an increase in alpha-syn immunoreactivity in the substantia nigra and dorsal striatum (dSTR), which were both recovered after 15 days of withdraw. Furthermore, SHR rats were resistant to reserpine-induced TH decrement in the substantia nigra, and presented reduced immunoreactivity to a-syn inthe dSTR relative to Wistar rats, irrespective of treatment. This effect was accompanied by increase of malondaldhyde (MDA) in the striatum of reserpine-treated Wistar rats, while SHR presented reduced MDA in both control and reserpine conditions relative to Wistar strain. In conclusion, the current results show that SHR are resilient to motor and neurochemical impairments induced by the repeated low-dose reserpine protocol.
